Thomas Jeffrey Hanks (born July 9th, 1956) is an American actor and filmmaker. He is known for his comedic and dramatic performances, he is considered to be one of the most admired and well-known film stars around the world and is widely regarded as an American popular culture icon. Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was a Concord, California native to Janet Marylyn Hanks, a hospital worker and Amos Mefford Hanks an itinerant cook. His mother, who was initially known as "Fraga", was born into a Portuguese family. His father was predominantly English. Tom was raised in what he describes as a "fractured" family. He did not have any experience in acting in college, and credits his inability be cast in a university production as the reason he started his career. He went downtown, and took part in a community theatre production, and was given an invitation by the director the show to visit Cleveland and from there, the beginning of his acting career took off.
